(1) This Policy replaces Chapter 3.20 of the Academic Policy (December 2010). (2) The Policy introduces the concept of academic standing of students and establishes early intervention processes to support academically at risk students. (3) For the purpose of this Policy refer to the Academic Board's Definitions Policy. (4) To introduce policy and procedures on academic standing of students to increase student retention and to formalise early intervention procedures, academic support and learning assistance activities for academically at risk students. (5) This Policy should be read in conjunction with the Rules Relating to Awards. The related Student Retention Policy provides the detailed philosophy underpinning both policies. (6) The following processes will be implemented. (7) At the end of each study period a student will be automatically assigned an 'academic standing' based on their GPA in the previous study period. The GPA described below relates to the performance in a single study period and is not the student's GPA over their course. (8) There are 3 categories of standing: (9) This standing will be allocated by Student One and appear on My Enrolment when grades are published. (10) All students start with GPA 3.0 OR ABOVE academic standing. The Student Retention Policy provides measures to assist students to retain this standing. First year students are particularly at academic risk and the Student Retention Policy, clauses (13) to (16) describes specific measures to support the first year experience. (11) A student with SEEK HELP academic standing will be advised of their standing, given a weblink to the sources of academic assistance and encouraged to seek and use these resources in their next study period. (12) A student with MUST GET HELP academic standing will be advised of their standing, given a weblink to the sources of academic assistance and informed that they must contact their course co-ordinator urgently. (13) Under Standard 10 of the National Code, the University is required to systematically monitor onshore international students' course progress at the end point of each study period. Southern Cross University must be proactive in notifying and counselling students who are at risk of failing to meet course progress requirements.Academic Standing of Students Policy
